EARNINGS LOSS AT VODAFONE
Posted on 05.30.06 by Nikhil @ 7:19 pm

Vodafone announced that it had a net loss of $40.7 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31. That compares to a profit of about $12 billion a year earlier. Part of the reason for the big loss was $43.7 billion in charges for the writedown of assets acquired in 1999-2000. But Vodafone’s chief executive, Arun Sarin, painted a bright picture for the company’s future saying that he will work to cut costs in Europe and ramp up growth in emerging markets. EARTHLINK GETS NEW ORLEANS
Posted on 05.28.06 by Nikhil @ 10:34 am

The city of New Orleans has been using a wireless network from Earthlink, after Hurricane Katrina, as a way to maintain emergency contact between its workers. It’s been a heated situation because telephone companies have lobbied against the network. The telecoms are legally in the right, because state laws say that publicly-owned, wireless networks offering fast wireless service are illegal. However, New Orleans now says that EarthLink will go ahead and build a network that covers fifteen square miles. The service will provide a free service as well as a faster service for $21.95-a-month. The Red Herring has more details.

CHINESE 3G IN EUROPE?
Posted on 05.26.06 by Nikhil @ 3:29 pm

China has its own 3G standard known as TD-SCDMA. The main difference is that it uses a different frequency for voice calls and data than W-CDMA. Interestingly, France Telecom, which has a research arm in Beijing says it is assessing the Chinese version of 3G and it may even deploy it in Europe. This would be big news for the Chinese and reflects growing foreign interest in TD-SCDMA. Click Here to read more from Cellular News.

TWO-WAY RADIO BUSINESS BOOM
Posted on 05.17.06 by Nikhil @ 4:06 pm

New York - Every now and then, I run across an interesting company that investors should know about. The latest is West Melbourne, Fla.-based Relm Wireless, which has carved out a very nice business for itself as a low-price, high-margin manufacturer of two-way land mobile radios.

Traditionally, the biggest market for Relm has been public safety. Its customers include the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Parks Service, to name just a few. About 70% of revenue comes from these organizations. To read about Relm’s new market opportunities, check out my column on Forbes.com by clicking here.

NOKIA SIGNS ON FOR GOOGLE TALK
Posted on 05.15.06 by Nikhil @ 12:16 pm

Nokia is coming out with a new version of its 770 Internet Tablet that will run the Google Talk software. Its an exciting development both for Google and for Nokia and hopefully will help Nokia, which has been trying to move beyond traditional mobile phones. I think the move is a smart one - already Motorola uses Google’s seach technology in its phones. This feature, which allows for chat and talk, should make the 770 a more compelling machine. U.S. MONITORING CELL PHONE RECORDS
Posted on 05.13.06 by Nikhil @ 10:01 am

Theres lots of controversy over the recent news that the NSA is monitoring the calls of millions of Americans. Shortly after the September 11th attacks, the U.S. began collecting call logs. President Bush has defended the National Security Agency’s phone surveillance program, saying the government is “not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans.” My view is that the the government’s is dangerous. While I don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with the government using computers to look for call patterns that could uncover a terrorist cell, or prevent future attacks, I do think that the process of keeping -and the possibility of mining - call records, could pose a danger the privacy of Americans, should the government’s agenda one day change. ELECTRONIC ARTS AT E3 EXPO
Posted on 05.12.06 by Nikhil @ 9:41 am

I’ll be keeping an eye on Electronic Arts this week. The company’s stock fell more than 11% last week and trades around $47 per share—its 52 week low. The reason: a poor earnings forecast. For the current quarter, ending in June, EA forecasts a loss in the range of 36 to 42 cents a share. Sales are expected to range from $300 million to $340 million. Despite a number of broker downgrades, this company is the preeminent company in its field, and I think it will make a comeback. EA will be at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 Expo), which starts May 10th in Los Angeles. The company will be announcing a number of new videogame titles as well as its lineup of wireless titles. EA, you may recall, recently acquired Jamdat Mobile, a developer of wireless games. Electronic Arts will also debut Orcs & Elves, id Software’s new intellectual property, created exclusively for mobile phones by Fountainhead Entertainment. I’ll keep subscribers of Forbes Wireless Stock Watch current with the latest news from EA, and the prospects for the stock. TO GET THIS INFORMATION, CLICK HERE.
