The city of New Orleans has been using a wireless network from Earthlink, after Hurricane Katrina, as a way to maintain emergency contact between its workers. It’s been a heated situation because telephone companies have lobbied against the network. The telecoms are legally in the right, because state laws say that publicly-owned, wireless networks offering fast wireless service are illegal. However, New Orleans now says that EarthLink will go ahead and build a network that covers fifteen square miles.
