Qualcomm just had its analyst day— where CEO Paul Jacobs made an interesting observation. He said his company is winning on the low-cost handset front in India despite predictions that CDMA technology didn’t have enough economies of scale to compete with GSM in that low-cost handset market. He said CDMA phones are outselling GSM phones in the sub-$50 range in India. All this is very important because the opportunities for future growth come from selling low-cost handsets to emerging markets. While it’s true that the GSM community enjoys greater economies of scale, the CDMA Development Group has said that aggregating the features and options so that manufacturers only have to build to one particular skew is the key to low-cost handsets. To read more about Qualcomm’s penetration in the low-end handset market read this article posted on Cellular News. Filed under: Stock Watch and News Comments: None |

Last week, the founder and CEO of Comverse Technology stepped down. So did two other executives. The reason: Federal prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the way Comverse grants stock options in light of the company’s announcement that it would restate more than five years of financial results because some option-grants on record didn’t match the actual grant dates. That’s significant because it appears stock-option grants to top executives were regularly dated just ahead of large share price increases and often near the bottom of steep declines. The dates correspond to low exercise prices on the options so the executives get bigger profits if shares rise. The stock, however, continues to do quite well because the removal of these executives was seen as a positive, and because the executives that run the core businesses are long time veterans of Comverse and will remain. RCR News has a story on this. Filed under: Stock Watch and Miscellaneous and News Comments: None |

Watch out iPod! According to ABI Research, phones with hard drives and large amounts of data storage are about to eclipse the portable music player. One of the first to do this could be Samsung’s SPH-V5400, which is loaded with 1.5 GB of storage – and that was in its phone released in 2004. Today, there are others – such as Nokia’s N91 with 4 GB, and most recently Samsung’s SGH-i310 with 8 GB. Read more about this trend at ABI Research.
